From the very beginning, Big Bear A/C & Heating has been dedicated to honest and personal customer service, and superior results. We have strived to earn the best reputation of any A/C company in McKinney, Frisco, Plano and throughout the north DFW communities.
We have now been in business for over 10 years, but it all started with one hot day in the bushes. This is the story of Big Bear…
“It’s always been curious to me how things work out sometimes. While working for my first HVAC company right out of school, I came to the realization that if something had to be done I couldn’t wait on anyone else. After a while, I left that company and started working for a second, larger company. Up to this point, I was used to working by myself. So at first I found it difficult to stop for breaks and have other people help with equipment installations.
One day while doing a complete A/C & heating system replacement at a customer’s house, the two guys I was working with decided to go to lunch. Knowing that there was still a lot of work left to be done, I decided to keep going while they left to get some food. Now, running a new set of copper lines from the outside of the house into the attic is a difficult task, especially if you’re doing it by yourself. The work area in the customer’s yard had a small concrete foundation with the condenser in the middle of it. This whole area was surrounded by tall holly bushes. Wrestling the copper line set alone in that small space…I tell you, progress was slooow. I was grunting and moving around the area just trying to get the lines into the attic before the other guys returned from lunch. I didn’t know that they had already pulled up in the van. What I also didn’t know was that while I was fighting the copper lines, I was backing up into all those holly bushes, and they were rocking and swaying all over the place! I finally got the lines in deep enough that I could go back up to the attic to finish pulling them in. As I worked my way out of the bushes, I noticed the guys were back, just sitting in the van and laughing up a storm. Then one of them hung out the window and yelled, “Man, when we drove up, all we saw was those bushes moving and swaying around…and then when you came through there…it looked just like a big bear coming out of the woods!” After that, the nickname just sort of stuck with me.
Sometime later I decided it was time to hang out my own shingle. There’s a lot to do when you start your own business. The first thing to decide on after passing the state’s contractor license exam was a good name for the business. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, and in fact it was probably one of the most difficult tasks to check off the list. We wanted a name that would be unique, easily remembered and recognized. We came up with and discarded a lot of names. Finally I remembered that funny story and the nickname, and there it was! Little did we know then how much more important the name and what it symbolizes would become.
So…what does ‘bear’ mean to me? Well, bears are often seen climbing trees and dangerous cliffs. At Big Bear, we aren’t scared of heights or cramped attic spaces. Bears are also known for having a great sense of smell. At Big Bear, we will sniff out a customer’s A/C or heating problem and provide choices for how to proceed. When a bear is hungry, it’s unstoppable. At Big Bear, we consider ourselves unstoppable when we need to complete a job for a customer. Bears are sometimes seen as aggressive. At Big Bear, we are aggressive towards helping our customers and taking care of their problems. And finally, we all know how a mama bear takes care of her cubs. At Big Bear, we want to take care of our customers just like that mama bear. We want to make sure our customers are protected from vultures, weasels, and wolves.
What started as a joke during a funny situation has turned into a way of life for our business. I don’t think it could have turned out better if we had planned it.”
